TAR 30, Recap Leg 8, 2/7/18

Welcome to Leg 8! Last time, on Waking People Up at 4 AM Is Quirky, 6 teams raced from Prague to Zimbabwe. There was a shocking new twist called the Partner Swap, which was really an Intersection where teams swapped partners and kept racing. Not being able to drive stick meant that Kristi and Jessica had to take the other Detour option and had a difficult time remembering what to do. But, because this leg was ridiculous, it was non-elim, and teams were given their next clue immediately and told to keep racing. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:
1st – Alex and Conor, The Race Car Drivers, #TeamIndyCar
2nd – Lucas and Brittany, Team Baywatch, #TeamOceanRescue
3rd – Eric and Daniel, The Wondertwins, #TheFirefighters
4th – Henry and Evan, Beauty and the Geek Take 2, #TeamYale
5th – Cody and Jessica, Team Reality Show YDC, #TeamBigBrother
6th – Kristi and Jen, The Freestyle Skiers, #TeamExtreme

Savannah Plains Overlook, Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservatory, Marondera, Zimbabwe

Alex/Conor (1st)
Clue: Make your way back to Harare and find Khan Fabrics, Haberdashery and Sports to get your next clue. You have $18 for this leg of the race. CAUTION: DOUBLE U-TURN AHEAD!

(Toyouke: “I don't mind the U-Turn but I hope it's after the Detour where it properly belongs.”)

Lucas/Brittany (2nd)
Eric/Daniel (3rd)
Henry/Evan (4th)
Cody/Jessica (5th)
Kristi/Jen (6th)

So, teams get in the provided vehicles and make their way back to Harare. Teams make their way to Khan and arrive in the following order:

1- Lucas/Brittany
2- Alex/Conor
3- Kristi/Jen
4- Cody/Jessica
5- Eric/Daniel
6- Henry/Evan

When they arrive, teams find the U-Turn. (Toyouke: “Shouldn't the U-Turn be AFTER the Detour?”)

This is a Double U-Turn. Teams may choose to U-turn any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the U-Turn once during the race. If a team is U-turned, they must go back to the Detour choices and complete the Detour that they did not complete. This U-Turn is doubled, meaning two teams may U-Turn two other teams. Phil, during his explanation, does not say how many U-Turns there will be on this race.

1- Lucas/Brittany choose to U-Turn Cody/Jessica
2- Alex/Connor choose to U-Turn Henry/Evan
3- Kristi/Jen cannot use the U-Turn
4- Cody/Jessica have already used the U-Turn, but are U-Turned
5- Eric/Daniel cannot use the U-Turn
6- Henry/Evan cannot use the U-Turn and are U-Turned

So Big Brother and Yale have been U-Turned and now must complete both Detour options. (Toyouke: “Hmm. It's been so long since I saw the U-Turn used to penalize two teams, instead of one team and then a waste. I certainly can't fault U-Turning Yale, but Big Brother? You're not going to U-Turn Extreme? That smells extremely suspicious. All of a sudden Jessica hates Evan and then they're both U-Turned? Stupid. Are Big Brother any kind of threat?”)

Teams open their clues after the U-Turn, and we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Handle With Care OR Just Get It There

*Handle With Care: Teams must travel to Eastgate Mall, an indoor mall designed to have a natural cooling system. Teams must put on delivery uniforms and deliver seven packages to various businesses and pick up outgoing mail. Once all seven packages are delivered, teams will get their next clue.
*Just Get It There: Teams travel to Magaba Tyres, don a blue suit, and each roll a tire through the market to Cameron Hardware and place it on a flatbed truck. Once the tires were delivered, the truck driver would give them their next clue.

1- Alex/Conor choose Just Get It There – and deliver their tires to the wrong truck.
2- Kristi/Jen choose Just Get It There
3- Lucas/Brittany choose Just Get It There
4- Cody/Jessica choose Handle With Care – and complete this task while Henry and Evan are showing up. So then they head to Just Get It There to complete the other Detour. (Toyouke: “Not sure you really should be dragging that box along the ground. Although that box looks pretty empty.”)
5- Henry/Evan choose Just Get It There – and get it there relatively quickly, so they head to Handle With Care.
6- Eric/Daniel choose Handle With Care – and they check to see if they can carry more than one at a time. (Toyouke: “Hmm. I do appreciate checking to see if you can carry more than one. Extra clue checking! I really want that to be important later.”)

Much tire rolling and package delivering ensues. (Toyouke: “Why did no one notice two packages are going to the same place and take them at the same time?”) So, teams complete the detours in the following order:

1- Kristi/Jen
2- Lucas/Brittany
3- Alex/Conor
4- Eric/Daniel
5- Henry/Evan
6- Cody/Jessica

Teams are now instructed to travel to Harare Gardens to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Kristi/Jen
2- Lucas/Brittany
3- Alex/Conor
4- Eric/Daniel
5- Henry/Evan
6- Cody/Jessica

Teams are now instructed to Get Down the Zimbab-way. (Toyouke: “OK first of all, the name of this task is terrible. Second, why isn't this a Roadblock? Third, I don't want to watch all these people try to speak foreign languages.”) Teams are instructed to pick an instructor and learn a song in Shona. When teams are ready, they perform the song with choreography on stage while pronouncing the words with proper rhythm and pronunciation. (Toyouke: “Oh I'm sure they're going to be lenient on the "singing". I'm sure this is a pronunciation task with a bonus of locals laughing at Americans.”) Teams sing, dance and complete the task in the following order:

1- Lucas/Brittany
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Alex/Conor
4- Henry/Evan
5- Cody/Jessica
6- Eric/Daniel

Teams find now that they must travel by foot to First Street Pedestrian Mall, the PIT STOP of the eighth leg of this racearoundtheworld. (Toyouke: “"It said by foot" Please let someone pull a Heave.”) The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Lucas/Brittany – who win a trip for 2 from Travelocity to Saint Lucia. And everyone gets ice cream!
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Alex/Conor
4- Henry/Evan – (Toyouke: “Woo! I would be sad if Yale left. I mean, I totally get U-Turning them, and if they'd gone out that way it certainly wouldn't be unfair or anything. But I like them. Also I think they're slightly less likely to hold a grudge about it.”)
5- Cody/Jessica
6- Eric/Daniel – (Toyouke: “So the U-Turn was completely pointless. Did they think that task would be easier? Because if it had been then the rest of the leg would have mattered. See the whole leg came down to the last task, just like in a head-to-head, but I don't care because the only reason it did is because everyone sucked at the task.”)

And Eric and Daniel are eliminated, because they can’t sing or dance. Eric: “We didn’t have rhythm, so we have the blues!” Heh.

ORDER NOW:
1st – Lucas/Brittany
2nd – Kristi/Jen
3rd – Alex/Conor
4th – Henry/Evan
5th – Cody/Jessica

Next week: A new TAR country: Bahrain! Henry and Evan start bickering over navigation. And does everyone have their passports? Until next time!
