TAR 30, Recap Leg 12, 2/21/18

Welcome to Leg 12! Last time, on That Crab Just Bit Me!, 4 teams raced from Thailand to Hong Kong. Henry and Evan had a Speed Bump, and managed to move into first, because Henry speaks Chinese. Conor melted down something awful when he got bit by a crab, had to speak Chinese, and then went crazy looking for hidden clues that didn’t exist. At any rate, this slowed them down and Indy Car was eliminated on the course. Which leaves us with Henry and Evan, the dating debaters from Yale, who were nearly eliminated by the first Head to Head, and then bounced back from being both U-Turned and Speed Bumped; Cody and Jessica, Team Big Brother, who fell in love in the BB House and have basically made it this far thanks for Cody; and Kristi and Jen, the freestyle skiiers who, as a team, have never placed below third on the entire race. (Toyouke: “This is a tough final three. Except for Jessica. “) Three teams remain. Who will win The Amazing Race 29? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:
1st – Henry and Evan, Beauty and the Geek Take 2, #TeamYale
2nd – Cody and Jessica, Team Reality Show YDC, #TeamBigBrother
3rd – Kristi and Jen, The Freestyle Skiers, #TeamExtreme

Intersection of Johnston Road and Wan Chai Road, Hong Kong, China

Henry/Evan (1st)
Clue: Fly 7000 miles to your FINAL DESTINATION CITY, San Francisco, California! Once there, make your way to AT&T Park and find the statue of the Say Hey Kid Willie Mays to get your next clue.

Cody/Jessica (2nd)
Kristi/Jen (3rd)

So, teams make their way to the airport. They arrive in the following order:

1- Henry/Evan
2- Cody/Jessica
3- Kristi/Jen

All teams get the same flight to San Francisco (of course). (Toyouke: “Yeah, I guess when they give you business class tickets that are probably direct, there's no risk to checking your bags like there was that one season where they had layovers they couldn't take. “) So teams get on their flights in Business Class, and the Amazing Orange Line gets them to San Francisco International Airport in the following order:

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Henry/Evan

Teams get taxis and make their way to AT&T Park. They arrive at the Say Hey Kid in the following order:

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Henry/Evan

Teams arrive and are told to Pull Some Balls from the Drink. In San Francisco, home runs end up in McCovey Cove, so teams are told to make their way to Pier 40, find a kayak, and pick up baseballs that are equal to the number of home runs hit by Willie Mays in his career (660). (Toyouke: “This seems hard. And in the dark too.  However I love that it's on the statue but no one noticed. “) Teams take the baseballs to an umpire, also in a kayak, to get their next clue. So, teams arrive at Pier 40 in the following order:

1- Henry/Evan
2- Kristi/Jen – who actually take a moment to find out the number of Willie Mays’ home runs before heading down.
3- Cody/Jessica

Teams search for balls and get the correct numbers and get their clue from the umpire (Toyouke: “What poor PA or whatever had to sit in a kayak, in umpire gear, in the middle of the night, just for this dumb task?”) in the following order:

1- Kristi/Jen
2- Cody/Jessica – who get help from a passerby on street level.
3- Henry/Evan – who eavesdrop on BB’s passerby.

When they rip open the clue, teams get the ninth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who brought an extra pair of underwear?

In this roadblock, one team member must use a pair of ascenders to climb 200 feet to the top of the center anchorage of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge. Once at the top, the roadblocker must then freefall into the center to get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Cody
2- Kristi
3- Evan

After much climbing and falling, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Henry/Evan

Teams are now given a rebus clue that they must solve in order to travel to their next destination, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company. Teams figure out the rebus and arrive at the fortune cookie factory in the following order:

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Kristi/Jen
3- Henry/Evan

Teams are now instructed to each make a tray of 51 fortune cookies. Once teams complete 102 perfect cookies, they receive their next clue. (Toyouke: “It's not a difficult task, particularly. It's not like they don't know what they're supposed to look like when you're done.”) The cookies are completed and teams get their clues in the following order:

1- Kristi/Jen
2- Cody/Jessica
3- Henry/Evan

Teams are now instructed to make their way to the USS Hornet and search the pier for their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Kristi/Jen
2- Henry/Evan
3- Cody/Jessica

Once they arrive, teams get the final task.

FINAL TASK:

Who’s ready for take off?

In this final task, both team members must search the 7 decks, 1000 compartments and 900 foot length of the USS Hornet for 12 puzzle pieces to create a model airplane. Only 6 of the 12 pieces fit on the plane, but the plane must contain symbols representing all 12 legs of the race. Some symbols are on multiple pieces and some legs are represented by multiple symbols. The person who did not do the roadblock on the leg must create the plane. Once the plane is correct, the puzzle solver pushes the plane to their partner and get their next clue.

For reference: The Legs and their correct symbols: Leg 1 Iceland: Off Road Helmet; Leg 2 Belgium: French Fries; Leg 3 Morocco: Fish; Leg 4 France: Boat Rudder; Leg 5 France: Knight; Leg 6 Czech Republic: Magnifying Glass; Leg 7 Zimbabwe: Canteen; Leg 8 Zimbabwe: Microphone; Leg 9 Bahrain: Scale; Leg 10 Thailand: Elephant; Leg 11 Hong Kong: Handcuffs; Leg 12 USA: Oars.

Teams take over an hour to find all the pieces on the USS Hornet, and then Jen, Henry and Jessica start assembling the planes. (Toyouke: “This is how the final task should be: three people wracking their brains trying to remember each leg of the race. Is this going to turn into the "hello/goodbye" final task? Where no one knows what they're doing and it takes hours because everyone is just guessing every combination? I mean I guess that's a method. It did result in the team I was rooting for winning, but it kind of felt cheap.”) Teams finish the task in the following order:

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Henry/Evan – who had a correct plane, and then switched a piece before having it checked.
3- Kristi/Jen

Teams find now that they must make their way across the USS Hornet to the opposite deck, the FINISH LINE of this racearoundtheworld. The first team to arrive will WIN the Amazing Race!

1- Cody/Jessica
2- Henry/Evan
3- Kristi/Jen

21 cities, 9 countries, 29000 miles, Cody and Jessica, you are the winners of The Amazing Race 30! (Toyouke: “I mean they were the least objectionable Big Brother team but that's not saying much. I wanted Extreme to win. They dominated the whole race and then went out on the last task. You can't tell me Jessica was the smartest person working that task.”) And. . .that’s about it.

ORDER NOW:
1st – Cody/Jessica
2nd – Henry/Evan
3rd – Kristi/Jen
4th – Alex/Conor
5th – Lucas/Brittany
6th – Eric/Daniel
7th – Trevor/Chris
8th – Joey/Tim
9th – Cedric/Shawn
10th – April/Sarah
11th – Dessie/Kayla

Next season: TAR 31! Well, at least CBS has promised it to us at some point. We’ll see when that occurs. Until next time!
