TAR25, Recap Leg 3, 10/10/14

Welcome to Leg 3! Last time, on Roadblock?  We Don’t Need No Stinking Roadblock,  teams raced from the US Virgin Islands to London England.  The Wrestlers struggled at the Changing of the Guards, and other teams certainly couldn’t punt a boat.  But Adam and Bethany managed to snag an Express Pass and first place, while the YDC and Flight Attendants had a race to the finish, causing Dennis and Isabelle to be eliminated.  Who will be eliminated. . . next? Clue: Make your way to the Shetland Islands, Scotland!  Take a train to Aberdeen, Scotland and choose a Ford Focus to drive onto the ferry to the Shetland Islands.  Once there, drive yourselves to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute in Lerwick and find the puffin to get your next clue.

Tim/Te Jay (5th) – because the Chyron guy apparently doesn’t care about flamers.

1:56 AM Michael/Scott (6th) – but does care about firefighters, especially when one of them twists his ankle.

And then the chyron guy said screw this and didn’t bother to give departure times for anyone else.

So teams make their way to Oxford Train Station and make their way to Aberdeen.  Teams arrive in the following order:

7- Amy/Maya

8- Shelley/Nici

9- Kym/Alli – who decide to go hang out at a pub.  (Toyouke: “Yeah while you're acting like a moron, everyone else is ahead of you in line. But sure, go dance around.”)

Teams find out the first train to Aberdeen is at 6:36 am, so all teams end up on the same train.  They arrive in Aberdeen and make their way to the ferry in the following order:

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Brooke/Robbie

7- Amy/Maya

Teams cross to the Shetland Islands via ferry.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Misti/Jim

2- Adam/Bethany

3- Tim/Te Jay

4- Michael/Scott 

5- Amy/Maya

6- Keith/Whitney

7- Shelley/Nici

8- Brooke/Robbie

9- Kym/Alli

Teams drive their cars to Lerwick to find the Lifeboat Institute.  (Toyouke: “Oh good, we're getting the "drive yourself" out of the way.”)   Teams arrive and get their clue from the puffin in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya  

2- Michael/Scott

3- Keith/Whitney

4- Misti/Jim 

5- Shelley/Nici  

6- Adam/Bethany

7- Brooke/Robbie

8- Tim/Te Jay

9- Kym/Alli

Tams are now instructed to drive themselves to Scalloway Castle and search the grounds for the next clue.  Teams arrive and find the clue in the following order:

1- Keith/Whitney

2- Michael/Scott

3- Amy/Maya

4- Adam/Bethany 

5- Brooke/Robbie

6- Misti/Jim

7- Shelley/Nici

8- Kym/Alli

9- Tim/Te Jay – who got horribly turned around en route to the castle.

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Pony Up OR Light My Fire

*Pony Up: Teams must travel to the Peats of Scalloway in order to cut 50 blocks of peat using a tusker.  Once complete, teams loaded a Shetland pony with two loads of peat to be delivered to a farmer at the top of a hill.  Once delivered, teams got their next clue.

*Light My Fire: Teams travel to D.I.T.T. in Lerwick to pick up materials to participate in Up Helly Aa, a traditional Viking torch building.  Teams get into traditional clothing, go through the three step building process, then deliver the torch to Hay’s Dock and get their clue from the guizer jarl.

(Toyouke: “Dig up and deliver 50 bricks of peat or build one torch? Seriously? There must be a catch.

Also I missed the Detour name but I'm pretty sure it's dumb.”)

2- Keith/Whitney choose Light My Fire

3- Shelley/Nici choose Pony Up

4- Amy/Maya choose Pony Up – (Toyouke: “Did I miss something? I mean, yeah, Jim saying "I am the best and I can lift things, rawr" makes total sense. But why would the scientists not say "I think we can build one torch"?”)

5- Adam/Bethany choose Pony Up – (Toyouke: “Why are the ponies suddenly all angry? Are they all mad at Jim? Because I am.”)

6- Brooke/Robbie choose Light My Fire – after getting lost on the way to Pony Up.

7- Michael/Scott choose Light My Fire

8- Kym/Alli choose Light My Fire

9- Tim/Te Jay choose Light My Fire – Tim: "I love to wrap presents!"

(Toyouke: “I wonder if all the whinnying is actually happening or if the sound guys spliced that in later.  I also wonder how people get this far in life without knowing how to bend nails.“)  After much peat shoveling and torch building, teams complete the detour in the following order:

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to Berry Farm in Scalloway.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Misti/Jim  

2- Shelley/Nici

3- Adam/Bethany 

4- Amy/Maya

5- Kym/Alli

6- Keith/Whitney

7- Tim/Te Jay   

8- Michael/Scott

9- Brooke/Robbie

When teams read the Berry Farm clue, they find that they are going to have to herd sheep.  Teams guide eight sheep through a course of three gates to a pen at the end of the course and lock the sheep in.  Once complete, they would receive their next clue.

Teams herd sheep and get their clue in the following order:

1- Misti/Jim  

2- Amy/Maya – (Toyouke: “I wonder how the girls did this so fast. Maybe they are just not threatening?”)

3- Adam/Bethany 

4- Keith/Whitney

5- Shelley/Nici

6- Kym/Alli

7- Brooke/Robbie   

8- Michael/Scott

9- Tim/Te Jay

The shepherd James hands each team a Celtic brooch with the instructions to “Go where this was found.”  Teams had to figure out that the item was found in a treasure horde on St. Ninian’s Isle, the PIT STOP of the third leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Misti/Jim – who are greeted by the puffin and win a trip for two to Dubai.

2- Adam/Bethany  

3- Keith/Whitney

4- Shelley/Nici

5- Amy/Maya – who get sent back to the castle and end up taking the long way to the Pit Stop.

6- Brooke/Robbie 

7- Kym/Alli  

8- Tim/Te Jay 

9- Michael/Scott – who get sent to Weisdale by people in a pub, because that's where they think the brooch was made.  (Toyouke: “Oh no. Don't ask drunk people anything.”)

And that mistake costs the firefighters the race.  The ankle would have done them in eventually anyway.
