TAR22, Recap Leg 12, 5/5/13

Welcome to Leg 12! Last time, on You’d Better Run Belfast Before They Catch Up,  teams raced from Edinburgh to Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Caroline and Jennifer broke down at the Roadblock, causing them to fall very behind, enough to make them the final team eliminated from the race.  That leaves Max and Katie, the newlyweds with three consecutive first place finishes under their belts, Bates and Anthony, the hockey playing brothers with strong outlooks and big hearts, and Mona and Beth, the roller derby playing moms who seem to have stronger longevity than most teams.  Who will win The Amazing Race 22? Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

Clue: Travel to your Final Destination City!  But first, travel by ferry to Liverpool and make your way to London.  Find the Euston Tap, order a pint and get your next clue.  

(Toyouke: “Interesting. Generally they just let you go to the final city.  Especially when you're just going to bunch them in several spots.”)

5:47 AM Mona/Beth (3rd)

Teams travel to the ferry and arrive in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Bates/Anthony 

3- Mona/Beth

Teams make their way to Liverpool on the 10:30 AM ferry and arrive in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Bates/Anthony 

3- Mona/Beth

Teams jump on the train and arrive in London in the following order:

1- Mona/Beth

2- Max/Katie  

3- Bates/Anthony

Teams make their way to Euston Tap and get their pints and clues in the following order:

1- Mona/Beth

2- Max/Katie

3- Bates/Anthony

Teams are finally told to go to their FINAL DESTINATION CITY: Washington, DC, USA!  Once there, teams are instructed to make their way to the Lincoln Memorial and find the location where Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his “I have a dream” speech.  Teams make their way to Heathrow in the following order:

1- Mona/Beth

2- Max/Katie 

3- Bates/Anthony

Teams find out that they must wait until 5:15 AM to get tickets, which then all happen to be on the same flight.  So all teams jump on the Amazing Red Line and arrive in Washington in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Mona/Beth

3- Bates/Anthony

Teams make their way to the Lincoln Memorial and find their contact to get their next clue in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Mona/Beth

3- Bates/Anthony

Teams are now instructed to travel to 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue and find a Secret Service Agent who will take them to have a picture take of them with the President in order to get their next clue.  Teams arrive and get pictures in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Bates/Anthony

3- Mona/Beth – who accidently go to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. first.  Oops.

After taking pictures which feature them with the President (Hee!) they are instructed to find the marked car at the paddle boat dock near the tidal basin.  They are to knock three times on the rear window to get the briefcase that contains their next clue.

Teams arrive at the marked car in the following order:

1- Max/Katie

2- Bates/Anthony

3- Mona/Beth

And teams get the thirteenth and final roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready for some covert ops?

In this roadblock, roadblockers must travel around the grand basin searching through 50 agents using a password.  Once they find the right agent, they will get a response and swap briefcases.  They will also receive the passcode to get their next clue: “The key to your briefcase is your order of finish from New Zealand, Indonesia and Vietnam.”  Once the briefcase opens, teams will get their next clue.

If this seems familiar, it is a Switchback to TAR8, Leg 2, when the families did the same task.  Yeah, I’d forgotten it too.  (Toyouke: “This is also kind of a Swedish Roulette situation and I don't like that the last task involves this.”)

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Max – combo: 832

2- Bates  - combo: 374

3- Beth – combo: 763

After much briefcase trading, teams finish the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Bates/Anthony

2- Mona/Beth  

3- Max/Katie

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Nationals Stadium.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Bates/Anthony

2- Max/Katie   

3- Mona/Beth

Teams are instructed to choose a member to suspend from a zip line, while the other member puts on a baseball mascot uniform and tries to catch a baseball dropped to them by their partner.  Once the baseball is caught, it will reveal the next clue.

Teams catch the ball in the following order:

1- Bates/Anthony

2- Max/Katie   

3- Mona/Beth

The ball instructs teams to travel to Hains Point, which they do in the following order:

1- Bates/Anthony

2- Max/Katie   

3- Mona/Beth

Teams arrive at Hains Point and are given the Final Task.

FINAL TASK:

Teams find three stations and a giant ball pit full of globes.  Teams must search the globe pit for 10 that have the countries (or territories or sovereign states, as the case may be) from their travels highlighted: French Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Botswana, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, Northern Ireland, United States.  Onc ethe ten globes have been found and placed in the correct order, the next clue will be revealed.

(Toyouke: “OK, OK, "retrace your route" is a good task. Although ANOTHER Swedish Roulette task is not OK. Wouldn't it be enough to make then know where each of the countries are? Like, find them on a map? I feel like that would be difficult enough.”)

Teams complete the task in the following order:

1- Bates/Anthony
2- Max/Katie

3- Mona/Beth

Once teams get their clue, they learn they are on their way to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home and the FINISH LINE of this racearoundtheworld.  The first team to arrive WILL win the Amazing Race!
