TAR22, Recap Leg 4, 3/11/13

Welcome to Leg 4! Last time, on Adventures in New Zealand, teams raced from French Polynesia to New Zealand.  Dave popped his Achilles and just kept racing.  Chuck and Wynona end up in last, but Dave and Connor log their first first place finish, and are told to keep racing. Who will be eliminated. . . next?

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

Dave/Connor (1st) – (Toyouke: “See, they didn't even pretend they weren't continuing.”)

Clue: Fly 4000 miles to Bail, Indonesia!  Once there, make your way to Monkey Forest to have a monkey reveal your next clue.

Teams find out that they need to book their flight before they head to the airport (Toyouke: “Can you not buy tickets at the airport in New Zealand?  That would be a thing to research if you ever go on the race. Imagine the time you could save.”)  and arrive at the travel agency in the following order:

1- Dave/Connor

2- Caroline/Jennifer

3- Max/Katie – who actually called ahead to get their flight, so they really needed to just stop by and pick up the tickets.

4- Joey/Meghan 

5- Jessica/John

6- Mona/Beth

7- Chuck/Wynona

8- Bates/Anthony

9- Pam/Winnie – who actually bypassed the travel agent all together by booking their flights online.

Teams now make their way to Bali on the following flights:

Flight 1, via Perth, arrives 8:30 AM

Flight 2, via Kuala Lumpur, arrives 12:05 PM

1) Mona/Beth

Flight 3, via Singapore, arrives 12:05 PM

Somehow, when Youtube and Cocky got to Singapore, they were able to get a better flight.  So, teams arrive in Bali in the following order:

1- Pam/Winnie

2- Dave/Connor

3- Max/Katie 

4- Caroline/Jennifer  - who finally sing their country songs to a taksi driver.  (Toyouke: “I do not need country singing.”)

5- Jessica/John

6- Joey/Meghan

7- Bates/Anthony – who apparently pick the stupid cab driver.

8- Mona/Beth

9- Chuck/Wynona

Teams no make their way to the Monkey Forest in the following order:

1- Pam/Winnie

2- Dave/Connor

3- Caroline/Jennifer – Jennifer: “I’ve always wanted a monkey!”  Caroline: “Yes, but your flying squirrel died in your bra due to loneliness.”

4- Max/Katie

5- Jessica/John

6- Joey/Meghan

7- Mona/Beth

8- Chuck/Wynona

9- Bates/Anthony

Teams choose coconuts and get the monkeys to open them in the following order:

(Toyouke: “Why are monkeys involved in this? This seems annoying.”)

1- Dave/Connor

2- Max/Katie – Max: “It’s like they scratch their butt and then take a drink, like me in the morning!”

3- Pam/Winnie 

4- Caroline/Jennifer

5- Jessica/John – who get lost on the way to the Detour, and visit a random person’s house.

6- Joey/Meghan

7- Chuck/Wynona

8- Mona/Beth

9- Bates/Anthony – who decide their detour based on where their taxi driver can get them.

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Sandy Bottom OR Fruity Top

*Sandy Bottom: Teams must  dredge volcanic sand from the bottom of the Ayung River, place the sand into baskets atop their heads, then transport it 200 yards uphill to empty their baskets into a larger container. Once they filled their container to a designated line, the brick maker will give them their next clue.

*Fruity Top: Teams must, after donning sarongs, prepare a traditional Balinese religious offering known as a gebogan made from various arranged fruits. Teams then carry it in a procession to the Pura Desa Puseh Temple in Batuan where it would be blessed before it would be placed on an altar. Once complete, the local priest would give them their next clue.

(Toyouke: “This Detour seems really lopsided. Building fruit seems like it would take forever.”)

1- Dave/Connor choose Fruity Top – (Toyouke: “Wait, I know Dave and Connor took the easy one because Dave can't run around. But why wouldn't two fit people choose a Detour where you're only limited by how fast you can run?”)

2- Max/Katie choose Fruity Top

3- Pam/Winnie choose Fruity Top

4- Caroline/Jennifer choose Fruity Top

5- Joey/Meghan choose Fruity Top

6- Jessica/John choose Fruity Top – who realize they are having a hard time after John suggests that he pays really close attention to detail (Toyouke: “John, there is no way I am going to believe you are anal-retentive when you don't notice things like a parking brake or an address or a supposed task location with no cameras and no one speaking English.”), and Bald Snark to Sandy Bottom.  This is after they do some random craft project for a random local. Jessica: “Maybe we should use the Express Pass.”  John: “No, we’ll be fine.”

7- Mona/Beth choose Sandy Bottom

8- Chuck/Wynona choose Fruity Top

9- Bates/Anthony choose Fruity Top

Teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Pam/Winnie

2- Dave/Connor

3- Max/Katie 

4- Caroline/Jennifer 

5- Joey/Meghan  

6- Mona/Beth – Beth: “There’s no crying on the Amazing Race!”

7- Chuck/Wynona

8- Bates/Anthony

9- Jessica/John

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Uluwatu Surf Beach to find their next clue.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Pam/Winnie

2- Dave/Connor

3- Max/Katie 

4- Caroline/Jennifer 

5- Joey/Meghan  

6- Mona/Beth

7- Chuck/Wynona

8- Bates/Anthony

9- Jessica/John – Jessica: “All the other players are here!”  John: “That’s obviously disappointing!”

And once they arrive, teams get the fifth roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready to get totally tubular and be worked in a way-gnarly challenge?

In this roadblock, roadblockers must run to Ketut’s Surf Shop and search for a surfboard with a picture of the priest that blessed them in Bora Bora.  Once they have the surfboard, they can find their partner and run to the pit stop.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

2- Connor – who looks at Winnie’s surfboard to get the right answer.

After much surfboard finding and running about the stairs at the beach, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

8- Chuck/Wynona

9- John/Jessica

Teams find now that they must run to the mat at Uluwatu Surf Beach, the PIT STOP of the fourth leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Dave/Connor – who win $5000 each.  That’ll pay the medical bills.

3- Max/Katie

And John takes an hour and a half on the Roadblock.  Which means they are last.  And they never used the Express Pass.  (Toyouke: “Being eliminated when you have an Express Pass is like being voted out on Survivor when you have an Immunity Idol in your pocket. You look like an idiot and people like me who revel in schadenfreude love it.”)  John: “I don’t need a million dollars.  I have no regrets!”  Phil: “OK. . . “
